parisian adventures AKA the best weekend of my life

i wrote a note in my iphone entitled “the perfect days in paris,” because that’s really what they were.  i have never been more happy or carefree or excited in my entire life.  paris was literally a dream come true.  maggie, amanda, and i went last weekend. i was so happy that it was the three of us, because we all wanted the same things out of the trip—experience the culture, history, art, and obviously food of paris!

i’ve decided to include what i wrote on my iphone, so that you can get a better sense of my thought process and days spent in the most magical city in the world!

DAY ONE: may 11
5:45am wake up, got to mannheim by 6:30am
missed our train to paris (oops!), but allowed to get on the next train
decide to explore mannheim, find the schloss, walk around, talk
catch train to paris at 9:40am
first sight out of train station: top of the eiffel tower!
apricot crepe and baguette outside of the louvre
the louvre: mona lisa, winged glory, venus de milo, mummies, etc.
**fell up and then down the stairs by the egyptian exhibits…crippled for the rest of the weekend (swollen knee, can’t really walk up/down stairs)
saw the outsides of sainte chapelle and notre dame (too late to go inside)
went to shakespeare and company bookstore—bought book/bag! one of my fav places
delicious dinner! veal stew and sweet white wine, tried amanda’s escargot
walked through the Latin quarters, amazing!!! loud, lively atmosphere filled with creepy men (“halllooooo spice girls!” “too much beautiful” etc.)
met a group of egyptian boys, they were very persistent (“you, me, we friends….we go to seine”)
apple crepe and coffee!
went to the eiffel tower around 11:30pm: ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING. one of the most beautiful sights i have ever seen
long walk home! is our hostel really only an eight min walk from the eiffel tower?

DAY TWO: may 12
woke up early, yummy breakfast (oats and honey granola, baguette with stawberry jam and butter)
went to versailles!! so incredibly beautiful
lunch in Latin quarter: chorizo, mozz, and tomato baguette and lemon fanta (we ate sitting outside notre dame)
went inside notre dame—STUNNING
went to crypt (not the same as the catacombs…)
went to sainte chapelle—stained glass everywhere, so beautiful
shopping for a little bit, then went to starbucks to use the bathroom—wallet pickpocketed sometime in this process
walked through jardin de luxembourg—so pretty! observed a man literally closely jogging behind different runners and then stopping and finding his new prey
dinner in Latin quarter: french onion soup, mushroom sauce chicken, chocolate mousse, and white wine with blackberry liquor)
huge dance party in the metro station!!
home to hostel, met people from heidelberg, boston, various militaries

DAY THREE: may 13
woke up, had breakfast with one of the guys we met
went to musee d’orsay: saw so many renior, monet, manet, van gogh, etc. paintings
walked to champs elysees
ate banana nutella crepe while sitting on a bench in the park
had a mini photoshoot—flowers so beautiful!
random asian guy took a pic of me and him
saw the arc de triomph
lunch outside the train station (salad with peppers, mozz, and tomatoes, pasta with eggplant)
raspberry crepe!!!
train back to heidelberg :(

words can’t even begin to describe the beauty of this weekend. but i hope this gave at least a little bit of an idea :)

[Flash 10 is required to watch video]

walpurgisnacht: the night from 30 April to 1 May, is the night when witches are reputed to hold a large celebration and await the arrival of spring.

AKA huge party (at least 10,000 people…not even exaggerating) with huge bonfire, fire dancers, fire spitters or whatever that’s called, lots of alcohol, lots of firefighters/police/paramedics, literally my new favorite holiday!

the germans are OBSESSED with spargel. what is spargel, you might ask? ASPARAGUS. i don’t understand. it is literally everywhere. i’ve been trying to keep a photo documentary of all the spargel i’ve come across, but it’s not even possible. they dedicate pages of menus to spargel. it’s absolutely absurd!

what a wonderful day!

i know it’s been awhile since i’ve posted…i’m trying to get back on the wagon!  i am just soooo happy today for so many reasons!!

1) i am visiting greer in venice TOMORROW!!! eeeee i am beyond excited! it will be my first time in italy and the first time seeing her since december!

2) i am interning at the tiefburgergrundschule (elementary school) and i am in a second grade class! today was my first lesson and they all loved it! we sang a butterfly song in english to the tune of twinkle, twinkle little star and then colored butterflies/practiced english.  the kids are so cute and wanted to play with me during recess so of course i went! and they are just so adorable and i absolutely love it! i go in twice a week for two hours, which is the perfect amount of time at this point!

3) i got an email today from a family interested in me nannying for their almost 2 year old son! eeeeee i love children (if it isn’t apparent already) and love the idea of nannying/getting paid for something i love!

4) i found out today that i will also be volunteering in a german/english kindergarten in heidelberg with maggie, it’s going to be so much fun!

5) the skies are blue outside and sunny and it’s a beautifulllll day to be alive!
